Nasdaq's Record Can't Hide a Shaky Dow
The Nasdaq Composite closed at a second straight record high on Tuesday as chipmakers extended their rally, even as the Dow slid on weakness in Cisco, JPMorgan, and American Express — a split tape that leaves today's flash PMIs and the start of the Trump-Xi Washington summit as the swing factors before the bell. Financials and Communication Services lagged Tuesday's session while Materials and Technology led, and futures point to more of the same rotation this morning.

What matters today
- A split tape under the record. Chip strength drove the Nasdaq to new highs while bank stocks dragged the Dow lower. Stay selective rather than fighting either move.
- Trump hosts Xi at the White House. The Sept 23-25 Washington summit is the first Chinese state visit to the capital since 2015, covering trade, rare earths, AI, and the Iran war. Expect headline-driven swings in China-exposed names.
- Oil keeps sliding off its Iran-war spike. Crude has eased toward the high-$80s/low-$90s as diplomatic progress cools supply fears, a tailwind for broad risk appetite.
- The 10-year is still camped near 5%. Yields sit around 4.97% after briefly topping 5% for the first time since 2007. Rate-sensitive sectors remain under pressure.
- Flash PMIs are today's real catalyst. Services PMI is expected to cool to 55.9 from 56.8; Manufacturing PMI is expected to firm to 53.5 from 53.2, both due 9:45 AM ET.

What to Watch
Watch the 9:45 AM ET flash PMIs for the session's real directional cue — a hot services print reinforces the sticky-inflation, hawkish-Fed narrative and pressures yields further, while a soft print could extend Tuesday's AI-led rally. Layer in headline risk from the Trump-Xi summit and today's premarket earnings from General Mills, Paychex, and Cintas, and expect a news-driven rather than trend-driven session. Retail attention remains concentrated on AI infrastructure and chip names, along with leveraged bitcoin-miner proxies that saw aggressive call buying.
Sign-off
That's the setup heading into the bell. Markets remain in a bifurcated state — records at the index level, cracks underneath in rate-sensitive sectors — so today's data and diplomacy headlines carry outsized weight.
