Week in Review: Records, a Retail-Sales Miss, and a Loaded Week Ahead
Markets are closed for the weekend, so this edition looks back at a week that saw the S&P 500 clear 7,800 for the first time before Friday's soft data pulled it back, and looks ahead to a calendar stacked with Fed minutes and big-box retail earnings.
What happened
The S&P 500 touched a record above 7,800 on Thursday before slipping 0.17% Friday to 7,785.76 after July retail sales fell 0.6% (the worst miss in over a year) and the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index dropped to 51.0 from 55.2. Despite the Friday pullback, the index closed out a third consecutive winning week, its longest streak since May. The Dow slipped for the week while the Nasdaq eked out a small gain, but the real story was the Russell 2000, which touched fresh records multiple times and finished the week up 3.15%. The 10-year Treasury yield backed up to a 19-month high near 4.75% intraweek before settling around 4.70%, even as traders trimmed the odds of a September Fed hike to roughly 35% from 55% a week earlier.
Index snapshot (Friday's close)
| Index | Close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,785.76 | -0.17% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,729.16 | -0.28% |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 53,732.41 | -0.20% |
| Russell 2000 | 3,068.42 | +0.51% |
Five things that mattered
- Third straight weekly gain, record broken. The index cleared 7,800 Thursday before Friday's pullback, still logging its longest weekly win streak since May.
- Consumer data flashed warning signs. Retail sales and sentiment both missed badly, while year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.3%.
- Yields snapped back near 19-month highs. The 10-year touched 4.75% intraweek even as rate-hike odds fell — an unusual combination worth watching.
- Small-caps led. The Russell 2000 notched multiple records and outpaced every other major index this week.
- Reddit joins the S&P 500 Monday. RDDT jumped 10.4% Friday on confirmed index inclusion, while Middle East tension kept oil bid.
Options flow worth knowing about
Options desks flagged aggressive positioning in a handful of names this week. Traders bought NVDA's $265 calls expiring January 2027 on a full ask-side sweep worth roughly $1 million ahead of Nvidia's August 26 print. CoreWeave's $130 calls (March 2027) saw repeated, heavy buying worth roughly $5 million in premium — a sign of continued conviction in AI-infrastructure names. Index-level flow also showed size in SPX $8,200 calls expiring in October, a bet on continued melt-up, alongside pre-earnings sweeps in Micron and short-dated calls in Nebius.
What to Watch
The week ahead is dense. Monday brings the Empire State manufacturing survey and NAHB housing index. Tuesday layers in housing starts, building permits, import prices, industrial production and capacity utilization — plus premarket earnings from Home Depot, Baidu, Klarna and others. Wednesday's FOMC minutes from the July meeting will be parsed for clues on the Fed's next move, alongside earnings from Target, Analog Devices, Lowe's, TJX and Estée Lauder before the bell, and Wolfspeed, Bill Holdings, Coty and Webull after the close. Thursday's Philadelphia Fed survey and jobless claims land alongside Walmart, Deere and Alibaba before the open and Ross Stores after the close. All of it sets up for the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium later this month, where new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is expected to deliver his first keynote address as chair.
Sign-off
That's the week that was, and the week that's coming. With volume thin and volatility near multi-month lows, the data prints and earnings above have an outsized chance of moving markets from here. See you at the bell Monday.
